Max Greenfield of 'New Girl'
Max Greenfield, "New Girl"
Nomination Status: Somebody new has to make the field. It might as well be Greenfield, since Emmy voters prefer shiny-and-new to respected-and-previously-overlooked. Total hunch here. Probably wrong. Feeling less convinced of it with each word I type. Better walk away now.
In His Favor: Although Greenfield had been working steadily for decade, he became the surprise fall breakout in what was supposed to be "The Zooey Deschanel Show." The douchy-yet-lovable Schmidt was the character everybody was talking about for weeks at a time, as Greenfield proved to be both hilarious and weirdly sympathetic.
Working Against Him: Is it possible that as we got deeper into the spring, Jake Johnson actually usurped Greenfield? Johnson's only in my "Honorable mention" field, but with the indie success of "Safety Not Guaranteed," he could siphon off a lot of "New Girl"-supporting votes. For now, Greenfield hasn't been nominated for anything for this role, so it's total speculation that he struck any kind of chord at all.
