Madeleine Stowe of 'Revenge'
Madeleine Stowe, "Revenge"
Nomination Status: Well, there was that Golden Globe nomination? So... Who knows?
In Her Favor: If you like soap opera-style scenery chewing, Madeleine Stowe did it with aplomb on "Revenge" this past season. She was stylish and icy and vicious and it was always fun to watch her, even when the fun-level on the show itself often wavered. Stowe snagged an out-of-left-field Golden Globe nomination, which boosts her candidacy from "patently absurd" to "ridiculously unlikely."
Working Against Her: Leaving aside whether or not you think Stowe's performance is anything more than expertly one-note, I don't think even her fiercest defenders can make the argument that this is anything other than a supporting performance. It's not like "Revenge" gives equal time to Stowe and Emily Van Camp. No. The star of "Revenge" is Emily Van Camp. The character whose narrative is the only major narrative on "Revenge" is played by Emily Van Camp. The show is not an ensemble. It's not like you're flipping a coin between several possibilities. No. This is a supporting performance and, as such, it doesn't have anywhere near the multi-dimensional layering required to compete with the standouts in this category. That Golden Globe voters put Stowe head-to-head with Claire Danes in "Homeland" for an award is laughable. That Emmy voters will do the same is, thankfully, doubtful.
