Laura Dern of 'Enlightened'
Laura Dern, "Enlightened"
Nomination Status: Golden Globe win makes her tough to exclude out-of-hand.
In Her Favor: Laura Dern helped create "Enlightened" and her performance has many supporters, hence its Golden Globes win. It's not exactly a comedic performance, per se, but it definitely has funny elements and it's definitely a "big" performance. Dern also has a strong Emmy track record with four previous nominations in only a limited number of TV work.
Working Against Her: Like "Girls," "Enlightened" is polarizing, but in terms of audience, "Enlightened" makes "Girls" look like "Modern Family." Dern has a long and successful past with the Globes that makes her win there seem less predictive and more like an outlier. She was, after all, Miss Golden Globe way back in 1982. In this case, the lack of SAG Award nomination feels more likely to be repeated than the Globe win.
