Zooey Deschanel of 'New Girl'
Zooey Deschanel, "New Girl"
Nomination Status: Figure Emmy voters buy into the gloaming of the Zooey hype.
In Her Favor: This fall, everywhere you went it was "Zooey! Zooey! Zooey!" And when "New Girl" was an out-of-the-box smash, it pretty much seemed like a confirmation of every word written about her adorkability. She added a Golden Globe nomination and the warm embrace only continued. Getting Zooey on the nomination rolls makes Zooey a guaranteed presenter, which makes everybody in Emmy-dom happy. All hail Queen Zooey.
Working Against Her: Hype aside, viewership for "New Girl" dwindled dramatically as the season progressed, which coincided weirdly with the sense that the show was gaining momentum creatively. Of course, the sense was also that the show was gaining momentum creatively as it ceased to be "The Zooey Deschanel Show" and became an ensemble. [Speaking personally, I like Zooey's performance in "New Girl" quite a bit and I still wouldn't put it in any Top 6 based on preference. Here's where the coin-flipping begins. The next five places in this gallery are nearly interchangeable. They *are* in the order I'm predicting for nominations, but I will be wrong.]
