Timothy Olyphant of 'Justified'
Timothy Olyphant, "Justified"
Nomination Status: Nominated last year, he could be pushed to the outside by performances with more buzz/hype.
In His Favor: In its second season, "Justified" made a big Emmy profile leap last year, landing four Emmy nods for acting, including Olyphant's first career nomination. "Justified" maintained its creative momentum in Season 3 and Olyphant continued to be the exceptional still point at the center of a sea of larger-than-life supporting performances. As I said before, the reason why you can have Walton Goggins and Neal McDonough go as big and broad as they do is because Olyphant grounds the show. He performed the same function on "Deadwood" and was similarly underrated for it.
Working Against Him: As great as Olyphant is at what he does and as important as what he does is to the success of "Justified," other performances in this category are designed to be more readily Emmy-accessible. Olyphant got his Emmy nod last year, but he hasn't added Golden Globe or SAG nominations to his haul.
