William H. Macy of 'Shameless'
William H. Macy, "Shameless"
Nomination Status: Improving work probably won't make the cut in a category this stiff.
In His Favor: Last year, Macy seemed miscast in this category, as Frank Gallagher felt like a predominantly supporting and comedic character in a Drama Lead category. In Season 2 of "Shameless," Frank became more dramatic and, in the arc with Louise Fletcher, more of a lead and Macy's performance became more consistently integrated with the tone of the overall series. Less of a distraction and more of an asset, Macy did terrific work in the second season of "Shameless" and as an Emmy favorite -- Nine nominations, two wins over the years -- it's reasonable to think that in a less stacked category, he could grab a nod.
Working Against Him: The category is too tough and "Shameless" didn't make an Emmy ripple -- Joan Cusack landed its only nomination -- in its first season. And although Macy's categorization is more appropriate this year, I can still make an easy argument that "Shameless" is a dark comedy and Macy's is a supporting performance.
