Hugh Bonneville of 'Downton Abbey'
Hugh Bonneville, "Downton Abbey"
Nomination Status: Depending on how strongly "Downton Abbey" registers with Emmy voters in its shift from Miniseries to Drama, Bonneville could very realistically swoop in and steal a nomination.
In His Favor: Hugh Bonneville is the designated Lead Actor candidate from "Downton Abbey" and the drama's second season offered plenty of moral complications for the Earl of Grantham. Folks love "Downton Abbey" and even if the second season wasn't as well received as the first, it could be a huge Emmy player.
Working Against Him: I love "Downton Abbey" and I love Hugh Bonneville's performance on "Downton Abbey," but he's 1/20th of a huge ensemble. Comparing his performance to Bryan Cranston's or Hugh Laurie's or... anybody else in the category... feels strange. If he's nominated, he'll take the place of somebody with better credentials, causing me to be annoyed by him. I don't want to be annoyed by Hugh Bonneville, so I hope this doesn't happen
