'The Walking Dead'
"The Walking Dead" (AMC)
Nomination Status: The second season closed strong and mobilized fans.
In Its Favor: Forget about the meandering first-half of the second season spent loitering around the farm. Remember the second-half of the second season, or at least the last two or three episodes of the second season. "The Walking Dead" did a lot to restore confidence as it finally pushed our characters way from Hershel's farm and as the writers finally became ruthless with some regular characters. "Walking Dead" will have some AMC support behind it and it remains a ratings juggernaut which can't hurt. All I'm sayin' is that the people who like "Walking Dead" LOVE "Walking Dead" and that's not such a small number.
Working Against It: Last year, "The Walking Dead" picked up four nominations, but they were all tech nods. Somehow, Frank Darabont's direction of the pilot couldn't even score a nomination. That won't change this year, though I'd love to see Guy Ferland's direction of "Better Angels" get some attention. Unless the near-excellence of those season-closing episodes somehow becomes the norm rather than the exception, this just isn't the kind of show that'll ever get real Emmy love.
