Nomination Status: La, la, la. I'll just bang my drum alone for "Shameless."
In Its Favor: "Shameless" became darker and more cohesive and generally just plain better in its second season on Showtime. The cast continues to be exceptional, led by Emmy Rossum, who would be an Emmy nominee in any fair and reasonable universe. "Shameless" continues to have actual, meaningful things to say about class in America and about the nuclear family unit. It's a show of substance and, at its best, it's also one of the best comedies on TV.
Working Against It: Showtime's heaviest and most convincing Emmy push will be behind "Homeland." Then "Dexter." Then one or two comedies. "Shameless" needs special handling and if Showtime couldn't get Emmy attention for the show last year, it doesn't stand much of a chance this year either. It's too much of a comedy to be accepted as "serious" drama and it's too much of a drama for anybody to take the risk of submitting it as a comedy. Oh well.
