Emmy Nomination Preview 2012 - Outstanding Drama Series
Once again, it's 'Mad Men' versus The World
Outstanding Drama Series
Last Year's Nominees:
"Mad Men"
"Dexter"
"Game of Thrones"
"Friday Night Lights"
"Boardwalk Empire"
"The Good Wife"
Attrition: Only "Friday Night Lights" is actually gone formally, but can we all agree that if "Dexter" gets another nomination in this category, we'll ignore the Emmys this year? This could or should be very smooth. "FNL" and "Dexter" out, "Homeland" and "Breaking Bad" in. I hardly need to do a gallery, do I? But wait... What about "Downton Abbey"? Uh-oh. Here's where things get complicated.

July 3, 2012 at 4:05PM EST Reply to CommentI actually think Boardwalk Empire is the one who is not getting nominated at expenses of Downtown Abbey.
Joe I'd be much more ok with that.
July 3, 2012 at 4:45PM ESTNick I was going to say the same thing. In my opinion, Peter Dinklage winning a emmy for Game Of thrones means emmy voters REALYY like the show (at least more than boardwalk empire).
July 3, 2012 at 4:46PM ESTLiz Yes, that seems like the much more likely "upset" to me.
July 3, 2012 at 6:17PM ESTDavid There is a precedent for a genre series getting nomed once and then forgotten: True Blood. Although they are of course very different shows.
July 3, 2012 at 8:46PM ESTCousin Larry Appleton Nick - While Dinklage was the most high profile win from either show, to say that Emmy voters like GOT more than Boardwalk is possibly misleading. Boardwalk Empire had more nominations 18/13 and wins 8/2 than Game of Thrones did. In fact, Boardwalk Empire won more Emmy's than *anything* did last year.
July 3, 2012 at 8:47PM ESTI think Dan is pretty much right on target here. I would almost consider Boardwalk a lock. I actually think Downton might be the show left out when all is said and done.

troopermsu Agreed! Too bad more viewers didn't see that excellent show.

July 3, 2012 at 4:48PM EST Reply to CommentMad Men remains easily my favorite show still running and I hope it wins but is it possible that past success may now start to hurt its chances? After all, no show has ever been given 5 Outstanding drama series emmys.
Dolphin I did not feel this season was up to par for a best drama nomination for Mad Men or for a best actor nomination for Jon Hamm. If either is nominated, it will be for past seasons' scripts and performances, and I don't like to see nominations passed out that way ... especially in such a competitive year as 2012.
July 4, 2012 at 2:58AM ESTHowever, episodes 11 and 12 were jaw-droppingly fantastic!! And Christina Hendricks had better walk off that stage with an Emmy. John Slattery should also be nominated. A writing Emmy for either ep 11 or 12 would totally be in order.

July 3, 2012 at 6:08PM EST Reply to CommentYou could have thrown The Secret Circle in this group just to get in one last pic of Phoebe Tonkin.
It was the right thing to do, and deep inside I think you know it...

July 4, 2012 at 9:07PM ESTDolphin Replace The Good Wife with Justified, and my vote would look identical to yours.
July 5, 2012 at 3:55AM EST1. Breaking Bad

July 3, 2012 at 11:17PM EST Reply to CommentAppreciate the words about Shameless, especially Emmy Rossum, it'll be a travesty if she's not nominated. As much as I love the Mad Men ladies, not one of them had the season Rossum did, sh carries that shows and goes through every emotion.

July 4, 2012 at 2:49AM EST Reply to CommentI want to see Justified break through in the Best Drama category. The writing and the dialogue were SUPERB this year (some scripts' dialog taken verbatim from Elmore Leonard's 2012 book, 'Raylan') so well-acted and choreographed by Tim Olyphant, Walton Goggins, Neal McDonough, and Jere Burns. They deserve Emmy's all around for Season 3. The choreography of some of the scenes was surprising, fantastic, jump out of your seat. Bravo!!!!!
Isaac While all of this is true, there's something that's bugging me about Justified. It neglects most of its main cast. Outside of Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins, nobody really talks about the main cast because they don't give them much to do outside of maybe an episode or two. Nick Searcy (Art) only really had one episode to shine this season while being mostly comic relief for the rest (and I really wish they did more with him, because I love Art) and they barely do anything with Jacob Pitts (Tim) or Erica Tazel (Rachel). I'm sure most people see those names in the opening credits and have no idea who they are. To be fair, Joelle Carter (Ava) did have plenty to do this season, but I always wonder why they have a cast of actors in the opening credits when they're going to spend most of their time on the guest characters.
July 5, 2012 at 3:21AM ESTDolphin Isaac, you won't get any argument from me. I'd love to see more of Rachael and Tim in Season 4. More Art is also a must! They spent a lot of time on Arlo's character, but we saw why in the season ender. 13 eps is not enough of Justified.

July 4, 2012 at 2:56AM EST Reply to CommentDownton Abbey: I prefer Cougarton Abbey, the English 6-part miniseries that was remade into Cougar Town.
I actually think Breaking Bad might steal this one from Mad Men, and it will be wll deserved. Not that MM had a bad year, BB just had a really, really great one. As in: One of the greatest seasons of TV ever.

July 4, 2012 at 3:18PM EST Reply to CommentI think it will actually be The Good Wife that misses out. Game of Thrones will get nominated.

July 4, 2012 at 9:38PM EST Reply to Comment#1: Breaking Bad - 4 seasons and it still has me on the edge of my seat every single episode. The only thing going against it is it is a very dark series. I hope it wins.
#2. Game of Thrones: I thought season 2 was better than season 1 and definitely better than some of the others mentioned (Homeland, Boardwalk Empire)
#3. Mad Men. Who am I kidding? It'll probably win.
Connor I thought Season 2 of Game of Thrones was better too. The show started out kinda shaky in the beginning of the first season, IMO, but it really hit its stride about halfway through Season 1 and has been consistently fantastic since. And I totally agree about Breaking Bad. Best show on TV by far.

July 4, 2012 at 9:55PM EST Reply to CommentI disagree about Game of Thrones not being nominated. I think it will make it along with Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Homeland, Downton Abbey, and either The Good Wife or Boardwalk Empire. I want Breaking Bad to win for the best season of any TV show ever.
sauloccl Mad Men, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones are pop culture phenomenons - and I believe they're 100% safe bets to be nominated.
July 5, 2012 at 8:03AM ESTThe Good Wife, Homeland, Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad are "only" great tv shows.
Anything can happen because Homeland is the best new show of the year and Breaking Bad is the *best* show, period. The Good Wife is the best network show. That's way I think these six shows will be nominated.
However, actors (SAG Awards) seems to love Boardwalk Empire -- and I haven't had the time to watch the current season yet. Or Justified's.

July 9, 2012 at 1:31AM EST Reply to CommentSecond season of Shameless was indeed a guilty pleasure and superb tv rolled into one! William H. Macy's character is not just superfluous, Rossum just continuously hit it out of the park.

July 18, 2012 at 8:20PM EST Reply to CommentIt seems like Boardwalk should be the one in danger of missing out to "Downton", not "Game of Thrones." I hear EVERYONE talk about "GoT", and NO ONE talking about "Boardwalk".
dan WonJ - You may be right, but is it possible that that has more to do with the people you surround yourself with and less to do with the potential Emmy prospects of "Boardwalk Empire"?
