"The Office" (NBC)
Nomination Status: You laugh derisively. Emmy precedent says you shouldn't laugh.
In Its Favor: I already bumped "Curb Your Enthusiasm" with its six Comedy Series nominations out of the field, but "The Office" doesn't just have six nominations in this category, but it's been nominated six consecutive years, including a win in 2006. Nobody thinks "The Office" deserves a nomination this year, but nobody thought it deserved a nomination last year, other than Emmy voters.
Working Against It: The difference between last year and this year is that I can look at last season and see a string of episodes that would convince me to vote for "The Office." The Michael Scott Leaves arc, which took up at least four or five episodes in the middle of the season, was very good. This year, though, I couldn't point to any arc or run of episodes that rose above "so-so" and most of the season was an unmitigated mess and viewership plummeted as the season progressed.
