Emmy Nomination Preview 2012 - Outstanding Comedy Series
Which new threats will try to dethrone 'Modern Family'?
Outstanding Comedy Series
Last Year's Nominees:
"Modern Family"
"Glee"
"The Office"
"30 Rock"
"Parks and Recreation"
"The Big Bang Theory"
Attrition: All of last year's nominees return, but surely there's room for lots of shuffling in this category. It's hard to imagine "The Office" getting nominated again, but it was hard to imagine "The Office" getting nominated here last year. Ditto with "Glee." There are at least two or three new comedies that will be banging down the door to try to get into this field, even if only one or two are realistically likely to make the cut.

Nick You can throw Modern Family in here too, which continues to coast ENTIRELY on having a great cast. There's nothing they're actually doing that makes the show worthy of being in this category anymore. So that's half the nominees already who don't really have any business being there. And this year is an especially sad case with the incredible number of GREAT contenders. My six would be:
July 2, 2012 at 5:31PM ESTParks and Recreation
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Louie
30 Rock
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Happy Endings
And it hurts to leave off Community and Eastbound & Down, not to mention I wouldn't mind seeing any of New Girl, Girls, Nurse Jackie, or Enlightened here. Yet with ALL OF THIS, we're going to continue giving half the nods to Glee, Modern Family, and Big Bang Theory - one complete monstrosity of a show and two others that are nothing more than comfort food. Oh, the joy of the Emmys.
Cousin Larry Appleton Between the nauseating love from the various award blocs and the over-the-top scorn from the Blogosphere, I'd say Modern Family has somehow become both overrated and underrated.
July 2, 2012 at 5:53PM ESTWhile I lean more towards the overrated side, to say the show is doing NOTHING to be worthy of even a nomination is a bit much to me.
Joe Agreed Cousin Larry though I think Nick may have been alluding to the writers having done nothing to make the show Emmy worthy (seriously if they win another writing award this year I'll throw up) as he did mention the show has a great cast. Also BBT & Glee... That really is sad.

July 2, 2012 at 6:44PM EST Reply to CommentHahaha...The Chuck entry was funny. I miss Chuck, that was a great show. It did get Emmys for choreography, so they did know it existed.
Depresses me how low...and how accurately...you logged Community.

youngjt80 It's great throughout! Jonah is one of the best characters on TV. Wait until you get to "Nicknames." Pissface will have you rolling.

Joe Considering I thought 2 was mostly godawful I'm glad I stopped watching this year.

Apart from winning Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation last year.
Joyeful That was a Creative Arts Emmy. The animator won the award. The show has not been recognized for its writing, direction or acting by the Emmys at all.

July 4, 2012 at 5:05PM EST Reply to CommentSo would you (and Alan) say HIMYM has 0 chance of a nomination? Not that I at all think it should be but it has been nominated in the past so I'm surprised you've ruled it out completely.

July 5, 2012 at 2:49AM EST Reply to CommentAm I the only person here who still loves Modern Family? It may not be as consistent as it was in its first season, but this season still offered some hilarious and very moving episodes. Some highlights for me were Phil on Wire, Treehouse, After the Fire, Little Bo Bleep, Aunt Mommy (my favorite of the season), Election Day, The Last Walt and I absolutely loved the finale Baby on Board. These are episodes that made me laugh, but also made me care for these people. I know some of the characters are infuriating at times, but that makes me love them even more (it's the same reason I'm a huge fan of Parenthood).
It might also be because I don't like comedies that spend so much time being clever and forget to make me care about their characters, though I feel like a lot of shows this year strike a pretty good balance between being clever and building their characters, such as Community (that's a show I could easily see as being too clever for its own good, but I've grown so attached to the characters that it doesn't feel that way) or Parks and Recreation, or even Louie (what resonates with me about Louie is that it's mostly about a decent man trying to survive life and taking all of his anger out on his standup, and I can totally relate to that).
On that note, I can't stand Curb Your Enthusiasm (I've always been turned off by how misanthropic that show is) and I'm having a really hard time with Girls. I see the value in it, but it's not a show I particularly enjoy watching.
