Emmy Nomination Preview 2011 - Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama
Archie Panjabi returns, but who will join her in the field?
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series
Last Year's Nominees:
Sharon Gless, "Burn Notice"
Rose Byrne, "Damages"
Archie Panjabi, "The Good Wife"
Christine Baranski, "The Good Wife"
Christina Hendricks, "Mad Men"
Elisabeth Moss, "Mad Men"
Attrition: Elisabeth Moss has correctly opted to move up Lead Actress. Rose Byrne isn't eligible after "Damages" took a year off in its transition from FX to DirecTV. At the very least, then, that means two new nominees.

June 14, 2011 at 3:35AM EST Reply to CommentOh Kadee Strickland was good in Private Practice with the aftermath of the rape but long shot given that the parent show is not on the emmy radar anymore, what more the less celebrated spin off.
I think Archie will win again this year. I hope Sandra Oh or Sara Ramirez could beat the odds and be nominated
Last year you didn't have Sharon Gless in the gallery right? I think we will have another "Sharon Gless" this year.
Anyway, I was about to suggest you have a gallery for guest actor/ guest actress too but I know that's too much work (and you probably don't watch Law & Order: SVU that much which is a necessity to give a reasonable gallery for guest actor/actress nods potential)
Anyway, looking forward to the upcoming galleries
dan Forg - Had to go back and check... Last year I had Sharon Gless in the "Other Notable Candidates," but I didn't have her getting a solo gallery page. I think it's certainly possible there will be more folks like that this year. The Supporting Actor Drama field -- posting either tonight or tomorrow -- is INSANE. I'm gonna make several mistakes there...

Mike What's insane about that category?... It's Walton Goggins vs. a bunch of chumps.
June 14, 2011 at 12:36PM ESTBut seriously, it definitely is ridiculously stacked, which is especially surprising since it lost about 10 deserving nominees from Lost being finished and Breaking Bad being on hiatus. I mean, could you imagine how it would look with all of those guys in the mix? You could have probably done an entire ballot with just actors from either of those shows last year.
Stacy Yeah, I’m interested to see the supporting actor category. With Lost gone, and Breaking Bad & Damages not airing new episodes, there are a LOT of open spaces.

June 14, 2011 at 4:13AM EST Reply to CommentMan I really hope Margo Martindale wins. I think she easily gave one of the top 4 or 5 performances of the last year. Also Dan minor correction, you have Elizabeth Moss moving up to Least Actress on the 1st page.
dan Fixed! Gracias...
June 14, 2011 at 11:29AM ESTAnd I agree with you on Margo. Best 4 or 5 performances in any category from last year. No doubt...

June 14, 2011 at 4:20AM EST Reply to CommentI hate to say this, but this field looks pretty weak.
I don't watch The Good Wife, but I hope those actors deserve the nominations because they should be easy to get.
When I tried to make my list, I picked six people by coincidence. I feel much stronger about the first three (in no particular order) than I do about the next three.
Margo Martindale (Justified)
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men)
Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones)
Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire)
Khandi Alexander (Treme)
Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men)
I went back and forth, but I'd take Martindale by Harlan inch over Hendricks.

June 14, 2011 at 5:32AM EST Reply to CommentFYi - Aimee Teagarden plays Julie TAYLOR, not Julie Cooper. Julie Cooper was Melinda Clarke's character on The OC.
LL Omg the first that popped in my head when I read that was, um "Julie Cooper" is currently on Nikita....
June 14, 2011 at 10:39AM ESTdan Damn you, THE OC!!!!
June 14, 2011 at 11:34AM ESTYou are, of course, correct. Fixed! Thanks...

June 14, 2011 at 7:55AM EST Reply to CommentHow is Debra Winger a contender but not Amy Ryan? She's a recent Oscar nominee who got a lot more acclaim for her turn than Winger. Lena Heady is going supporting She's a contender, probably moreso than Clarke.
Really Lena Heady? She's had one great scene. Clarke has given a much better performance.
June 14, 2011 at 8:01AM ESTdan John - Ryan's in my "Other notable names" list. Of course she's a contender. I'd just say in terms of overall industry status, Winger is an icon on a different level from Ryan, current acclaim or not.
June 14, 2011 at 11:37AM ESTAnd Lena Headey submitted as lead...

June 14, 2011 at 9:03AM EST Reply to CommentGood work by Dan to use a photo of Deborah Ann Woll to represent the entire "Other" category.
dan Duvisited - Trust me, I'd have given her a whole gallery page, but she was barely used on "True Blood" last season and no matter how devoted a fan I am, I couldn't justify it... Sigh. I hope this season is better...

June 14, 2011 at 11:55AM EST Reply to CommentAgreement on so many choices - but thank you, thank you Dan, for giving some notice to Lauren Hodges. I really miss both that character and that actress, and I'm hopeful she pops up on TV again.
As to who should win? Martindale, no question. But it being the Emmys, I'm guessing it'll be Kelly Macdonald because "Boardwalk" is still shiny and new - and with season 2 coming up it's probably in conversation. Can't say I'd feel bad about that - or really any of the top six - but Martindale gave one of TV's finest performances this season on "Justified."

June 14, 2011 at 6:56PM EST Reply to CommentI lol'd at Pauley Perrette, well done sir. Oh I love Abby purely for her zaniness and general wackiness.
And somebody needs to get Lauren Hodges back on TV. (And Jay Karnes too.)
Paul C Oh yeah, sort of mentioned it on Alan's...but any reason why Kelly Macdonald went for Supporting over Lead?
June 14, 2011 at 6:57PM ESTdan Paul - Regarding Kelly MacDonald, I think she just figured that as a known-but-not-KNOWN actress on a brand new show, her chances here were better than in the Lead category. She's probably right. And while her character is definitely the lead actress on "Boardwalk Empire," I suppose it isn't hard to argue that she's so completely secondary to Buscemi and Pitt that she's not totally cheating by placing herself here. It's my guess that if she remains as important on the show in Season Two and she gets a nomination here this year, she'll move up to Lead Actress next year...

Paul C Cool, many thanks for that Dan.

June 14, 2011 at 10:10PM EST Reply to CommentHey Dan, since I'm assuming you don't plan on doing a gallery for guest actress, I'm curious what your general thoughts are on that one, as I'm personally hoping that Jessica Pare and her oft-discussed teeth manage to take it down (especially with a great submission episode like Tomorrowland), is that a reasonable possibility?
dan Mike - I'd love to see Jessica Pare and Cara Buono both get nods. I'd also be rooting for Joan Cusack, Kaitlyn Dever (for "Justified"), Karina Logue (for "Terriers") and probably Julia Stiles... Yeah, that's a six I would want to see...

June 15, 2011 at 10:48PM EST Reply to CommentDan,
How do you feel about Maisie Williams in Game of Thrones? To young?
dan AT - I think she's fantastic and I think she *could* have been in my "Other Names" list. For now, the part has been a bit too minimal just by nature of the ensemble size. It's my hunch that Season 2 should throw her into the discussion for next year's list, assuming that HBO gets the second season started next spring...

June 16, 2011 at 7:32PM EST Reply to CommentEveryone thought Lena was going Lead but she went supporting. And she's a more high-profile name than Clarke. Neither has much of a shot.
Winger of course has been the industry for years, but Ryan is as well a contender, certainly more of a contender than almost half of the women that were mentioned.
