Emmy Nomination Preview 2011 - Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama
With four 2010 nominees gone, can Walton Goggins or John Noble move up?
Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series
Last Year's Nominees:
Aaron Paul, "Breaking Bad"
Martin Short, "Damages"
Terry O'Quinn, "Lost"
Michael Emerson, "Lost"
John Slattery, "Mad Men"
Andre Braugher, "Men of a Certain Age"
Attrition: This is one of the most wide-open categories on the Emmy ballot. "Breaking Bad" and "Damages" both missed the Emmy-qualifying calendar year, while "Lost" concluded its run last spring. That means this category is missing its defending champ (Paul), plus three other nominees. And even Slattery and Braugher don't necessarily seem like sure things to return. This gallery could have included 50 contenders, all with some reasonable claim either on my interest or on a plausible nomination. And the category's biggest question: How hard will Emmy voters have to work to exclude "Fringe" co-star John Noble.

dan LJA - Poor Vancouver! You go through life as a mostly peaceful city catering to Hollywood runaway productions and you blow one Stanley Cup and suddenly you become synonymous (for one night at least) with rioting!

Mike Yes, he submitted as a guest.

June 16, 2011 at 3:18AM EST Reply to CommentMuch tougher than the Supporting Actress category. Again, I don't watch "The Good Wife" because it isn't my type of show.
That being said, my nominees (in no particular order):
John Slattery (Mad Men)
Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones)
Walton Goggins (Justified)
John Noble (Fringe)
Michael Raymond-James (Terriers)
Michael B. Jordan (Friday Night Lights)
I have to give an honorable mention to Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age). I originally had 11 actors. After I cut it down, I was let with Braugher and the six above. Cutting Braugher was difficult, but this was my reasoning:
Slattery, Dinklage, Goggins, and Noble are uncuttable for me based on how incredible they are in their roles. While Jordan, Raymond-James, and Braugher are just a step below, I believe that Jordan and Raymond-James are accomplished more in their roles because of the degree of difficulty.
Anyone agree?
GuyITC Besides the couple of typos ("let should be "left" and "are" should be "have"), I should also add that my winner would be John Noble.
June 16, 2011 at 3:22AM ESTMandrake1979 Yes definitely Terriers should get some kind of respect. Great show. But I think that John Noble is just amazing to watch especially how he has played two version of the same character and made them so distinct from one another.

June 16, 2011 at 7:00AM EST Reply to CommentMy personal favourite: Walton Goggins. Should have won for "The Shield"
No. 2 choice: Shawn Hatosy (who isn't even in the gallery!)
Dinklage, Braugher (supporting?) and all "the good wives" are also very good.

June 16, 2011 at 10:57AM EST Reply to CommentMan, why can't they just nominate everyone? As I was going through this I kept saying "yes, he should get a nomination" until I ended up with a final list of about 20.

June 16, 2011 at 12:50PM EST Reply to CommentI think the Emmy voters are going to try to push network dramas this year. Therefore I think that The Good Wife and Parenthood will get more nominations and wins than predicted.
I also don't understand how John Noble can be considered a supporting actor. If he isn't physically on screen there isn't a moment where Peter, Olivia or Astrid are not thinking about or mentioning Walter's name. His story is so central to the Fringe mythos as well. I just don't understand how he can be considered supporting.
Also, can anyone explain the rules for how people can submit for Guest Actor when they are clearly a member of the regular cast of a show?
dan Tausif - Peter and Olivia are the leads on "Fringe." And even Joshua Jackson is submitted as supporting, so really Anna Torv is the star of "Fringe" and, if you think about it, that's pretty much the case.
June 16, 2011 at 1:28PM ESTAnyway, as for the Guest/Supporting thing, lots of actors who seem like regular or at least recurring stars on shows are just "guest stars" for contractual reasons. That's how a John Lithgow or a Julia Stiles or a Jimmy Smits can appear in EVERY episode (or nearly every episode) of a "Dexter" season and then become Guest Star Emmy contenders...
But a lot of the Emmy categories are simply self-submitting and self-regulating and thus they become a mess...
