Emmy Rossum of 'Shameless'
Emmy Rossum, "Shameless"
Nomination Status: There's one open spot here and several very viable contenders. My hunch? It's the new girl. I mean, check out her name...
In Her Favor: Emmy voters have become so accustomed to voting for Showtime stars as Lead Actress in a Comedy that the jump to Drama (for a show which, frankly, ought to have been submitted as a comedy) shouldn't be hard. Rossum has been a total revelation on "Shameless," displaying an emotional range absolutely nobody would have guessed she possessed after "Phantom of the Opera" and "The Day After Tomorrow." She's tough. She's funny. She's sexy. She's dynamic. She's giving one of the six best performances of any actress eligible in this category.
Working Against Her: And if this were the Golden Globes, Rossum wouldn't just be a lock to be nominated, she'd be a lock to win. This is not the Golden Globes, where they're even willing to nominate Piper Perabo if there isn't an Emmy Rossum handy. This is the Emmys and sometimes the Emmys like to make performers earn it and there may be a feeling that only a year or two removed from that "Dragonball" movie, Rossum hasn't paid enough dues.
