Emmy Nomination Preview 2011 - Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama
Kyra Sedgwick faces stiff competition to retain her crown
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series
Last Year's Nominees
Kyra Sedgwick, "The Closer"
Glenn Close, "Damages"
Connie Britton, "Friday Night Lights"
Julianna Margulies, "The Good Wife,"
Mariska Hargitay, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"
January Jones, "Mad Men"
Attrition: Only Glenn Close is legitimately out of the field, with "Damages" taking a year off. At least one of other five is almost a sure thing to fall out, but she's equally likely to be replaced by one of her co-stars. But more on that in a few...

June 19, 2011 at 3:44AM EST Reply to CommentIf and when Elizabeth Moss gets nominated, it seems really hard for her to lose once she submits "The Suitcase".
Also, I definitely can understand that this was a worse season for SoA, but given that last year Katey Sagal was so head and shoulders ahead of every other leading woman it was ridiculous, a slight come down still makes her easily one of the 6 best leading ladies of drama this year. Hopefully the Emmy voters can figure that out this time.
GuyITC That's what the money's for!

June 19, 2011 at 3:46AM EST Reply to CommentMy honorable mentions go to Melissa Leo (Treme), Jennifer Beals (The Chicago Code), and Mireille Enos (The Killing). They each did great jobs on their characters, but none were other-worldly and the characters were mostly one-dimensional. The same cannot be said about the actresses below.
Again, I don't watch The Good Wife. Here are my nominees (in no particular order):
Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
Emmy Rossum (Shameless)
Lauren Graham (Parenthood)
January Jones (Mad Men)
Anna Torv (Fringe)
I'll take Britton in a close call over Moss for my winner.
Juliana is a lock for a nod. I'm not sure Moss or Briton can beat her.

Margulies was also the favorite to win last year and Sedgwick ended up being the surprise winner. Julianna is a lock for a nomination but I don't think she's the favorite to win, especially when Elizabeth Moss submits The Suitcase.
June 19, 2011 at 11:22AM ESTanna Which means Margulies will win this year, to make up for Sedgwick beating her last year. Also The Good Wife has much more buzz now than it did a year ago.

June 19, 2011 at 4:30AM EST Reply to CommentElisabeth Moss should submit 'The Chysanthemum and the Sword' for award consideration? As I recall, she spent what brief time in front of the camera that episode riding round in circles on that Honda motorbike.
dan George - I said no such thing. I said it was a quality episode on her resume. And the ending of that episode is utter, carefree magic and a nice contrast to the only episode she could possibly submit, which is "The Suitcase."

June 19, 2011 at 6:14AM EST Reply to CommentWait a second, is Kelly Macdonald ineligible somehow? You can't tell me Mrs. Schroeder wasn't one of the top 5 performances of the year. I'm actually mad right now. Woo-sah.
GuyITC Kelly Macdonald is on the ballot as supporting.

June 19, 2011 at 8:16AM EST Reply to CommentMy nominees would be:
1. Elisabeth Moss
2. Anna Torv
3. Connie Britton
4. Emmy Rossum
5. Lauren Graham
6. Julianna Margulies
Unless we see some wonderful shock nominees like Anna Torv or Lauren Graham this race is between Moss and Margulies. Moss has the better episode to submit, so I give her the edge.

June 19, 2011 at 4:43PM EST Reply to CommentAnna Torv?? Please...
Anna Torv is nothing special. The way she played Olivia from the parallel earth* was basically the same although more perky and smiling more. And her Leonard Nimoy impression made my skin crawl. She does not stand out for me in any way - especially compared to the other potential nominees.
