With three-time winner Bryan Cranston out, the field is wide open
Tom Selleck of 'Blue Bloods'
Tom Selleck, "Blue Bloods"
Nomination Status: Don't laugh. Older viewers love "Blue Bloods" and Emmy voters love Tom Selleck.
In His Favor: "Blue Bloods" was one of the few scripted network hits of last season and viewer love and admiration for Tom Selleck was a big part of that. Selleck has seven career Emmy nominations and back in 1984, he even won an Emmy for "Magnum, P.I." Can you imagine the star of a show like "Magnum" winning a Lead Actor Emmy in 2011? I can't.
Working Against Him: This isn't 1984 and earning a nomination in this category isn't easy for a network show anymore. "Blue Bloods" isn't likely to attract much Emmy attention in other categories, which on one hand makes this a great place to give the show a little recognition, but which also requires that Selleck be a self-starter, rather than riding a wave of support.
