Emmy Nomination Preview 2011 - Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama
With three-time winner Bryan Cranston out, the field is wide open
Gabriel Byrne of 'In Treatment'
Gabriel Byrne, "In Treatment"
Nomination Status: With one more nomination slot, things get complicated. By my count, there are at least eight actors (probably more) with very legitimate potential claims. This is the "easy" and "safe" pick.
In His Favor: "In Treatment" has aired two previous seasons and Gabriel Byrne was nominated for Emmys for both of them. Nobody else in the running for the last nomination slot can make anywhere near that simple and coherent an argument. And Byrne's Dr. Paul Weston was, if anything, even more of a physical and psychological wreck in the show's third season. I'm predicting he picks up another nomination in this slot, but it's not like he doesn't have things going against him...
Working Against Him: There's a lot of competition. And there's a lot of competition from shows with many times more viewers and far more critical buzz. And there's even competition from actors with tonier pedigrees. There's a lot of competition.
