Emmy Nomination Preview 2011 - Outstanding Drama Series

Can anybody stop 'Mad Men' after three wins in a row?

Outstanding Drama Series

Outstanding Drama Series

Last Year's Nominees:
"Breaking Bad," AMC
"Dexter," Showtime
"The Good Wife," CBS
"Lost," ABC
"Mad Men," AMC
"True Blood," HBO

Attrition: Wait. Seriously? "True Blood" was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series last year? Oh, Emmy voters. You so crazy! But anyway... Back to attrition. "Breaking Bad" is taking the year off. And "Lost" has gone off to that Sideways Universe in the Sky. So that leaves at least two gaps, three if you assume Emmy voters will come to their senses and not nominate "True Blood."

As stated previously, I don't watch The Good Wife. That said...

This is a five show race for me. Those five are (in no particular order):

    Mad Men
    Friday Nights Lights
    Game of Thrones
    Justified
    Treme

After those five, it gets more cloudy. I think each show has a bunch of pluses and few minuses. I'll call this group honorable mention. They are (again, in no particular order):

    The Walking Dead
    Boardwalk Empire
    Parenthood
    Terriers
    Dexter
    Rubicon
    The Chicago Code

In the end, I'd take Mad Men as my winner in a close one over Friday Night Lights.

GuyITC My bad, I left "Fringe" off the honorable mention list.

      Jonnybon Justified is GUARANTEED.

I can't believe Shameless and Blue Bloods are even being mentioned...

dan JonnyBon - On what basis is it GUARANTEED? Because you say so? Sorry, I need a bit more precedent/logic before I make that prediction in this gallery.

No Sons of Anarchy? I would think it's 10 times more likely to grab a nomination over Terriers, Rubicon, etc. Not that it matters.

dan TheHolyAvenger - I can add it to the "Some Other Notables..." page if it would make you happy. As you say, it's probably more likely to get a nomination than "Terriers." Possibly even 10X more likely, what with 10-times-zero still equaling zero...

      Added!

    • Thank you sir. It really doesn't matter, but I had just seen a promo for the new season and it seemed weird that you didn't mention it all.

Game of Thrones is the Dark Knight of this category. Everyone will think it will get in, but it won't because the voters won't accept it.

GuyITC Oh, don't get me wrong. I absolutely don't think it will get nominated. I just think it should be.

Richard I don't know, Game of Thrones was the "hot" show right around the time the nominations were due. Being fresh in people's minds could help it out as opposed to if it had aired late last year.

So according to the presentation, you consider Mad Men-Dexter-Boardwalk-Good Wife locks and Game of Thrones close to a lock. Which show do you think has the higher chance of being the 6th one, True Blood?

dan Lucas - The gallery's in my prediction order. So the show I'm predicting for that final nomination is "Friday Night Lights." I'm utterly convinced it's the wrong prediction, but I've tried to toss in the occasional oddball guess, just because that's what Emmy voters inevitably end up doing as well. Also, the idea of predicting an Outstanding Drama nod for the third season of "True Blood" makes me sad.

Argh. When are we all going to stop playing this "Dexter is good" game of pretend?

Hatfield Not anytime soon. I just got some dirty looks from my sister-in-law for calling that Deb scene in the finale ridiculous

Victorycurtis Agreed. Dexter was good the first two seasons but started to deteriorate rapidly after that. I now only watch it if there is nothing else on.

True Blood Season 2 was better than Season 3? Since when!? Although to be fair...both seasons were pretty meh

LJA I thought S2 was better than S3, but they were both anemic compared to S1. See what I did there?

I don't get all the hate for True Blood, I honestly don't. Season 1 and 2 were great, a near-perfect mix of horror, mistery, comedy and heart. That being said, it won't get nominated again and it shouldn't be. Season 3 was just wrong and bad in so many different ways. Too many different side stories, most of them boring and poorly executed, original storylines that made me cringe... Alan Ball dropped the ball on this one, big time.

I also agree Showtime should've pushed Shameless for comedy series. It definitely deserves a nod, but it won't get it in this category. Maybe next year? I got my fingers crossed for an Emmy Rossum nomination.

"Other notable candidates: House" Haha. That was a joke to see who would notice, right?

I thought Boardwalk Empire was overrated, and I sincerely hope it doesn't somehow box out Game of Thrones, a far more engaging show.

And as much as I enjoy Skarsgard's and Manganiello's naked form on my television, True Blood shouldn't in any way be in this discussion.

All that being said, my heart is still with Terriers, even though I know it's going to get receive zero notice. Damn shame.

Chrissy I wonder what the boards around these parts would look like if Terriers somehow swept the nominations. Would it just be silent for, like, two hours, and then crash under the stress of 100000 fans logging in at the same time?

Oh, to dream. I think both BE and Walking Dead are crazy overrated. I don't watch Mad Men, but get that it is the best thing ever so:

      Mad Men
      Good Wife
      Game of Thrones
      Friday Night Lights
      Terriers
      Justified

(Wish list, not actual prediction, with Mad Men included because I know a lock when I see it.)

Mad Men probably should be winning as last season was just plain excellent, though with the mass Emmy folks I say it'll be a coin-toss between that and Boardwalk.

I can see The Walking Dead trading places with True Blood, no real logic, but it's just a feeling (in fairness the 'Pilot' was terrific).

I would be delighted if Game of Thrones & Justified got nominations, both thoroughly deserve them.

""Dexter" failed to pick up an Outstanding Drama Series nomination for its first season"

WHAT?!?! I had to go and look considering the S1 edges S2 as the show's best, but they nominated fricking Heroes that year instead. The idiots!

(Sidenote: Rubicon just finished with us and I took your & Alan's advice of deliberately not watching the finale. I didn't care at all for the Katherine Rhoemer stuff so the penultimate episode works pretty well as a series coda. A depressing one, but a finale nonetheless. Damn, that turned into a quality little show.)

hunter I really have to rewatch the whole series, but I don't get not watching the finale of Rubicon. You aren't getting any more of it, so just bite the bullet and watch it.

People - did anyone who saw season 3 of sons of anarchy really believe it was better than any of the first 2? Also - why all the hubbub over true blood? I've seen a couple of episodes and I just don't get it - seems like it appelals to the twilight/Buffy crowd mostly (teenaged females) ... If I had to pick a winner - I would say Mad Men in a landslide with Game of Thrones or the Good Wife far behind ... Justified, Boardwalk Empire, and Terriers (I wish) - pulling up the rear
