Cherry Jones won't repeat, so will a 'Grey's Anatomy' or 'Mad Men' co-star top the field?
S. Epatha Merkerson of 'Law & Order'
S. Epatha Merkerson, "Law & Order"
Nomination Status: A good opportunity to honor a well-regarded actress and say farewell to "Law & Order" at the same time.
In Her Favor: Although she has an Emmy win for "Lackawanna Blues," S. Epatha Merkerson has never even been nominated for her lengthy run on "Law & Order." Then again, her character has never battled cancer before and it has never been the show's final season before. If you look at the various categories, Merkerson is probably the "Law & Order" castmember most likely to sneak in and grab a nomination if voters are feeling nostalgic for "Law & Order." It's the right performer and the right category and it's not like Merkerson isn't reliably strong and worthy.
Working Against Her: Nostalgia is one thing, but "Law & Order" hasn't received a single Emmy nomination since 2003 (for guest star Tovah Feldshuh) and no regular cast member has been nominated since 2000. "Law & Order" has a lot of history behind it, but Merkerson will have to fight a different history to be nominated.
