Ty Burrell of 'Modern Family'
Ty Burrell, "Modern Family"
Nomination Status: Your most probable new face in the category.
In His Favor: Burrell was being hailed as the "Modern Family" breakout star for months before the series premiered. His clueless Phil Dunphy is a uniquely uncool-yet-cool dad and only Burrell's restraint and expert deadpan have kept the character from becoming irksome. Burrell's ace timing also made him the best part of the quickly cancelled "Out of Practice" and "Back to You," so it's good that executive producer Christopher Lloyd kept sticking with him.
Working Against Him: Burrell drew the pre-premiere buzz, but since the show actually launched, he has occasionally fallen into the shadow of Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and even Rico Rodriguez at times. That doesn't mean he won't get the nomination, just that ever "Modern Family" fan has a different favorite and Emmy voters are likely to be similarly fickle.
