Neil Patrick Harris of 'How I Met Your Mother'
Neil Patrick Harris, "How I Met Your Mother"
Nomination Status: Long-running nominee is fairly certain to return.
In His Favor: Nobody was especially enamored with "How I Met Your Mother" this past season and no character was more inconsistently written than Harris' Barney, whose journey from himbo to domesticated puppy dog back to himbo again took maybe three episodes. But don't expect Harris to go anywhere. He's likely to hold onto this nomination, he'll be in the running for a guest nod for his "Glee" one-off and it wouldn't be surprising to see him pick up yet another nomination for his work hosting either the Tonys or Emmys last year.
Working Against Him: For years, Harris was the underdog, the guy you rooted for to end Jeremy Piven's reign of terror. Then, last year, he was the favorite and lost. Suddenly, you look at the landscape and you look at Harris' season and it's conceivable that TV fans could have five or 10 actors they prefer in this potential field. That, of course, is just the way Emmy voters like it. Watch Harris win this year, knocking off folks like Ty Burrell and Nick Offerman.
