Nomination Status: This category's defending champ, just in case you've forgotten.
In His Favor: Last year's Emmy ceremony was supposed to be Neil Patrick Harris' coronation, but instead it was a night of career validation for the well-like, only-sometimes-respected Jon Cryer. While Cryer's win was an upset, it was only a minor upset and, after nominations four straight years, there's no reason to imagine that Cryer won't pick up another nod for a reliable comedy that remains TV's most watched. As usual, Cryer will be surrounded by nominees from hipper, edgier shows and he'll enter the telecast as an underdog. That doesn't mean we're predicting a second consecutive win for Cryer, but he'll be there when the names are read.
Working Against Him: For a nomination? Nothing except those pesky hipper, edgier shows. As we're sure to note again later, this is perhaps the most competitive Emmy category of all, with all six nominees still in the running this year, plus at least a dozen worthy competitors from newer shows including "Modern Family," "Community" and "Parks and Recreation." Even if we predict that three or four actors will hold onto their position, including Cryer, the number of potential replacements is legion.
