Emmy Nomination Preview 2010 - Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama

Glenn Close is the two-time champ, but can she hold off a good wife?

Glenn Close, "Damages"

Nomination Status: Two straight wins for this role, expect a third nomination at the very least.

In Her Favor: The "Oh look! A movie star on TV!" snobs love Glenn Close like a supermodel loves Tic Tacs. That isn't to say that Close isn't doing fantastic work on "Damages," but you'd think the sun rises in the Glenn and sets in the Close to hear Emmy voters. It's doubtful that the third season of "Damages" will have done anything to tarnish that luster.

Working Against Her: Leaving aside the usual carping that Close is well and truly a supporting actress in "Damages," she's never had competition like she will this year, assuming several new faces crack the field. In addition, "Damages" enters Emmy season with less overall buzz and a fourth season looking doubtful. Close was a runaway favorite the first two years. This year? It'll be a race.

Connie Britton FTW! I'm still hoping, praying, wishing she can break through.
And if only Kings has been a hit, I'm sure Susanna Thompson (along with Ian McShane) would've scored easy Emmy noms.

Huh? Glenn Close is NOT a supporting actress in "Damages." She IS "Damages." You have no idea what you're talking about. I guess I must be a "snob" (aka intelligent person with taste).

dan aaron - Glenn Close is the dominating acting force of "Damages." Yes. Granted. But structurally and dramatically, she is *not* the protagonist or driving force of the story. Structurally and dramatically, Rose Byrne's character is the "lead" in the story. And yes, I do have an idea of what I'm talking about. -Daniel

Franco Dan, dude, the whole show revolves around Patty Hewes. I get what you're saying, but it's most definitely a lead role.

Aww Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin side by side, The Piano reunion. I wanted them both to be nominated last year just for that shallow reason.

Love Lauren Graham, but no chance at all but glad to see her in your list ;)

    Anyway, my prediction

    Juliana Marguiles [The Good Wife]
    Glenn Close [Damages]
    Mariska Hargitay [Law and Order:SVU]
    Katey Sagal [Sons of Anarchy]
    Holly Hunter [Saving Grace]
    Sally Field [Brothers & Sisters)

    Leighton Meester? Ummm. no.

Far as I'm concerned the only woman worthy this year is January Jones. But she won't win, Julianna will and that makes me ill.

I think of January Jones as mostly a triumph of casting. It seems like Weiner purposely picked someone who would feel outmatched by the material she was acting, so that her insecurity would come through in her performance. It's a very Hitchcockian choice. But even after three years, I have a hard time seeing anything special about Jones's acting. She does what's needed to tell the story, but a lot of what she's called upon to do is be a blank slate upon whom the audience can project their own interpretation of the text.

      tigger500 Wow - I completely disagree.

I think she has done a terrifically nuanced job showing how Betty just slowly falls apart over the three seasons. You can see in every move, every expression, just how the facade is slowly crumbling. It's all in the body language. It's the kind of work that isn't showy and is so internal that people think "pretty girl = not doing much."

My vote would have to be for Katey Sagal for Sons of Anarchy. Her portrayl of Gemma was fierce and amazing. It's hard to believe that this was the same actress that did Peg Bundy on Married with Children for all those years...

My second choice (and even less likely) would be Connie Britton on Friday Night Lights. Her work in the fourth season was absolutely amazing. Whether Mrs. Coach was dealing with her daughter or teenagers that weren't even students at her school, you could see her care and compassion shining through. And the strength to stand tall in the face of such opposition - uh-maze-ing.

All of that said, I think it will probably go to either Glenn Close or Julianna Margulies.

Who ever argued that Close was supporting on 'Damages'? She absolutely dominated this (atrocious) season. But yes, Sally Field is certainly supporting, but I wouldn't even nominate her in that catagory.

I would argue that Lauren Graham actually stands a very slim shot at a nomination. NBC is campaigning the heck out of her and the series.

    My personal nominees:
    1. Connie Britton
    2. Katey Sagal
    3. Anna Gunn
    4. January Jones
    5. Lauren Graham
    6. Glenn Close

I've gone off Mariska Hargitay (and Chris Meloni) a bit ever since 'SVU' became 'The Benson & Stabler Show'. And I'm not sold on Glenn Close in the Lead Category.

So out of the other shows I watched, I'd go for:
    Katay Sagal
    Anna Gunn
    Juliana Marguiles
    Connie Britton
    January Jones
    Katay Sagal

Katey Sagal hands down should win! If Ms. Sagal doesn't WIN the Emmy, there's something funky with the awards process!!!

Honestly, the best female actresses have been on shows that are not very popular. HBO's Treme has some excellent female actresses (Melissa Leo, Khandi Alexander, Kim Dickens to name a few). I hope they at least get nominations, if not wins.
