"Family Guy," FOX
Nomination Status: Did the hard work last year in proving that an animated show can make the Outstanding Comedy field. Now? Coasting!
In Its Favor: Say what you will about "Family Guy" itself, but the "Family Guy" team has proved to be spectacularly adroit when it comes to Emmy promotional materials that get people talking. One could even argue that "Family Guy" has packed more laughs into the past two seasons of Emmy campaigning than into the past two seasons. It makes Emmy voters feel like they're hip and cool to vote for "Family Guy" plus, it'll probably make one or two confused voters feel like they're making some sort of Sarah Palin-related statement, which is always nice.
Working Against It: We're not going to start listing, but one could easily compile a hypothetical roster of 10 animated shows which could be argued in some circles to be superior to "Family Guy," whether you want to salute "The Simpsons" or "The Life and Times of Tim" or "Archer" or "The Ricky Gervais Show" or "South Park" or any of a half-dozen Adult Swim options. Is "Family Guy" being rewarded in this category merely for having the audacity to put its name forward at all? Perhaps.
