Emmy Nomination Preview 2009 - Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama
With last year's winner Zeljko Ivanek out of the field, is the door open for a 'Lost' or 'Grey's Anatomy' star?
John Mahoney of 'In Treatment'
John Mahoney, "In Treatment"
Nomination Status: Your favorite
Bottom Line: Because of David Hyde Pierce, John Mahoney never won an Emmy for "Frasier." We were actually a little surprised to realize that. So what we have here is a respected industry legend most decorated for his comedy work playing a powerfully dramatic role on a show that's already proven to be a fertile ground for Emmy wins? Barring something strange or surprising, Mahoney has to be considered the man to beat here, lining himself up for a potential Career Summation-style Emmy, a well-deserved one at that.

June 28, 2009 at 6:43PM EST Reply to CommentPaul, Davies, Emmerson, Kartheiser, and Noble are my favorite picks from your list. It will (unfortunately) never happen, but I would love to see James Callis recognized for his work as Gaius Baltar on BSG. Nelsan Ellis is probably my favorite actor from True Blood, but perhaps his award came in the form of Lafayette not being in that car. Also, thank you for not picking Jon Voight.

June 28, 2009 at 8:21PM EST Reply to CommentJordo - Jon Voight is submitted for "Guest Actor," as is Jimmy Smits for "Dexter." I suspect both will receive nominations. As for Ellis, my feelings on "True Blood" is very much on the record and although I respect "Battlestar," I confess that I just sortta forget about it. That makes me very much like the Emmy voters, I guess... -Daniel

But I'm such a sucker for Lost that all the categories would be filled with most, if not all, of Lost's main actors.
Is Mark Pellegrino a possibility for Best Guest Actor? His one episode in the Lost finale was f'n fantastic.

As for Pellegrino, he actually appears not to have submitted for guest actor. I can't say why not. He'd have had a hard time being nominated because so many Big Name actors with major roles -- Ted Danson, Jimmy Smits, Jon Voight -- are submitted in the guest category this year... --Daniel
