10 cases of Hollywood making the same movie twice - at the same time

'Mirror Mirror' and 'Snow White and the Huntsman' only the latest redundant cinematic pair

10 times when Hollywood made the same movie twice - at the same time

10 times when Hollywood made the same movie twice - at the same time

This Friday, a new take on the Snow White legend is coming to the big screen. In June, a new take on the Snow White legend is coming to the big screen. No, you're not seeing double.

Since "Mirror Mirror" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" aren't the only seemingly cloned films in studio history to hit the multiplex within months of each other, we thought it was a good time to take a look at those not-so-rare occasions where studios think alike, where two nearly-identical films get the simultaneous green light and then find themselves in a race to the screen. And, like most races, there can be only one winner...usually.

Valmont(1989) and Dangerous Liaisons(1988) would be another good example. Both have their charms.

And who could forget the triple threat of 1989:

Deep Star Six, Leviathan, and The Abyss

How about the slew of body-swap movies in the late 80s? No fewer than four were released in a 9-month period. Late Oct '87, 'Like Father Like Son' (Dudley Moore/Kirk Cameron); early '88, 'Vice Versa' (Judge Reinhold/Fred Savage); spring '88, '18 Again!' (George Burns/Charlie Schlatter) summer '88, 'Big' (Tom Hanks). Although 'Big' wasn't exactly a body-swap movie, it certainly contained similar elements of all the others. And don't forget in '91 the classic 'Switch' with Ellen Barkin and Jimmy Smits.

joe.attaboy Amen. I read somewhere that people who saw "Strangelove" first actually laughed aloud during "Fail Safe," thinking it was another comedy.

I kept waiting for the "Failsafe" and "Dr. Strangelove" matchup, which would be the most famous occurrence of this phenomenon. To overlook it... I would hazard a guess at the author's lack of knowledge about film, except that I'd never heard of Prefontaine.

troopermsu Given that the earliest film on this list is from 1993, either the authors' knowledge doesn't extend before that or they or their editors believe the readers of this site don't care about too much about anything before the 90s. Including 'Chasing Liberty' and 'First Daughter'? Come on.

abby536 Those 2 are actually the same movie. There was some kind of drama with the director so they remade the entire movie with much of the same cast. I believe there were also script changes. I saw one of these in the theater and have always wanted to see the other....but I truly cannot remember which one I saw.
