We're saving this one for last because Hollywood legend William Wyler was pretty much the king of this...he did it twice. Not only that, but the second streak could be extended to five if you don't count his World War II documentary "The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress" in between.* And, following that logic, had 1940's "The Westerner" been nominated, he would have directed NINE Best Picture nominees in a row. We'll call it two streaks of three in a row to be consistent, but the guy was a wonder.
"Dead End" (1937)
"Wuthering Heights" (1939)
"The Letter" (1940)
"The Little Foxes" (1941)
"Mrs. Miniver" (1942)
"The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946)*
"The Heiress" (1949)*
