We'd love to see these collaborations once more, please
Ang Lee and Tobey Maguire
Previous collaborations: "The Ice Storm" (1997); "Ride with the Devil" (1999)
Why Lee should: Y'know that writer played by Rafe Spall at the beginning and end of "Life of Pi?" It was originally shot with Maguire in the role. However, a decision was made that while Maguire's performance was more than satisfactory, his well-known presence distracted from the rest of the film (well, at least that's the current explanation). Months after Maguire is cut, "Pi" goes on to win four Oscars and Lee's old friend can only watch from the distance. Doesn't he owe him? Just a little bit?
Why Maguire should: He certainly tried to with "Pi," but obviously that didn't work out. Roles in the upcoming "The Great Gatsby," Jason Reitman's "Labor Day" and Edward Zwick's "Pawn Sacrifice" aside, the now 37-year-old actor is in dire need of a project of Lee's pedigree and Maguire did some of his best work in both "The Ice Storm" and "Rise with the Devil." But, hey, at least the fact they already tried is a good sign.
