'Thelma & Louise' (1991)

Ridley Scott's iconic road flick/female revenge fantasy could never be improved upon, so why even bother? With a smart, buoyant screenplay by Callie Khouri, effervescent performances from leads Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis and pitch-perfect direction by Scott, "Thelma & Louise" remains as fresh and emotionally resonant now as it was twenty years ago. The enduring iconography of the film's final shot alone is enough to make one wonder why any filmmaker would ever dare try and recapture the irrepressible spirit of the original.
