Dear Hollywood: Don't remake these '90s classics

Alright, I know what you're thinking: the '90s wasn't even that long ago! Isn't it a little too early to be putting out this list? Well sure, I think most of us can agree that it feels a little premature to be remaking films as recent as, say, "Point Break" or "The Crow", or...wait a minute, they already are remaking those movies? Yes, yes they are. See, the thing is, we're now more than 10 years removed from the '90s - far enough for risk-averse Hollywood studios to consider dusting off iconic titles from the decade that already possess a degree of built-in audience appeal. And while we could really care less about many of the films that may or may not be remade for a new generation (are we really going to make an issue over, say, a "Grumpy Old Men" reboot?), others most definitely are. Following is a list (a sequel of sorts...hmm...to our earlier '80s incarnation) of 12 '90s titles that are at least semi-likely to be remade and that we believe deserve to be left alone.

Once you're done scrolling through our picks, be sure to sound off with your own choices in the comments.

I don’t understand the point of this piece. Is there truly a danger of most of these movies being remade? Thelma and Louise? Really? I’m sure at some point, but the timing is all wrong, man. And Fight Club is even more remote a possibility. All of these actors and key production members are all still enjoying healthy careers. C’mon. I grant you Ghost and Clueless, and that’s just about it.

Gordon Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about most of these movies. I'd be fairly surprised if any of them were remade. And Face/Off was a terrible movie.

ceggertsen @Bradley Valentine you'd be surprised what Hollywood would be willing to remake to exploit an old title. I admit that some of these are less likely than others (it's a hypothetical piece, after all), but I don't think any of them are 100% out of the question.

Seven may be the best picture to win an Osacar.

brian Seven isn't even the best Fincher/Pitt movie on this list to not win an Oscar.

Clueless is itself a "remake" of Jane Austen's Emma and therefore is exempt from this list. The story is timeless and as with Shakespeare's plays is subject to all sorts of interpretations (10 Things I Hate About You = Taming of the Shrew, etc.). Someone may make a Clueless-ish movie in the future, but they'd just be reinterpreting Austen, not Heckerling.

ceggertsen "Clueless" was very loosely based on "Emma" and doesn't really count as a remake.

I can absolutely see them remaking Edward Scissor-hands or Ghost, but some of these (Seven, Fight Club, Face/Off, Scream) seem a little too recent (and too popular) to attempt a remake any time soon.

ceggertsen Agreed...this list is looking forward, in some cases, a decade or longer from now.

I could see Tim Burton himself remaking Scissorhands as animated or claymation.

Thank you for not calling "Seven" "Se7en."

God, I hate that. So effing pretentious. Your own Mr. McWeeney--a writer I normally like and respect a lot--is one of the worst offenders.

I'll say again what I said for the 80s list: It's easy to come up with movies that you don't think should be remade. Generally we don't want movies we liked to be remade. I think it's more interesting to think about what COULD be revisited creatively.

I'll throw out a few, most of which I liked but I think have either 1) room for improvement, 2) room for a modern update. or 3) a premise that you could pretty easily approach from a different angle.

Last of the Mohicans, The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park, Philadelphia, Clerks, 12 Monkeys, Gattaca, Wag the Dog, The Truman Show, and Meet Joe Black (hated the movie, but it has a good premise).

Joyeful Good suggestions. I'm not sure it would even be possible to remake The Truman Show in this day and age. When that movie came out, reality television was a relatively novel concept...now it's everywhere. I doubt it would have the same appeal.

All of this is interesting... But the greatest movie of the 90's wasn't even mentione... The Big Lebowski. There is no way that movie should be remade.
