'Dark Knight' to 'Pirates of the Caribbean': Blockbusters that could have been Best Picture nominees

10 hits from the past decade that Oscar would have recognized if the new rules were in effect

Black Hawk Down - 2001

U.S. Box Office: $108 million
Actual nominees that year:  "A Beautiful Mind," "Godsford Park," "In the Bedroom," "Moulin Rouge!," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring"
Winner: "A Beautiful Mind"

Justification: You can argue till the cows come how what a horrible choice "Mind" was, especially over "The Lord of the Rings," but "Black Hawk Down," with its four nominations, including best director, was famously left in the dust while "Bedroom" and "Godsford Park" surprised by getting in.  With today's new rules? No way.

Other potential nominees: "Bridget Jones Diary," "Ali," "A.I.," "Memento"
