5. 'Magic' (2007)
Yes, it’s political, but it’s not dogmatic or overbearing. It’s possible to listen (though a little incredulous to think anyone would) to the songs and never know they’re about George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and the anger Springsteen feels over the malfeasance that landed us in two wars and other misdeeds. A sense of disillusionment blankets the album on such songs as the sinister “Devil’s Arcade,” slippery “Your Own Worst Enemy” and mournful “Gypsy Biker.” But out of the ashes arises the wistful, melancholic “Girls In Their Summer Clothes,” one of the most gorgeous pop songs he’s ever recorded.
