Chalky ain't building no bookcase
(From "Anastasia," season 1, episode 4)
"Wire" fans excited to see Michael Kenneth Williams in a new HBO drama didn't get much reward in the first few episodes of "Boardwalk," where Chalky White either hung in the background or wasn't there at all. That all changed in a big way in the season's fourth episode, when Nucky tasked Chalky with interrogating an enemy who happened to belong to the local chapter of the KKK. As Chalky delivered a long, eloquent monologue about his humble, tragic childhood in Elgin, Texas, it became clear that Williams had so much more range than he'd been able to show as Omar Little, and Terence Winter began looking for ways to make Chalky more prominent, until he essentially promoted him to co-lead for the penultimate season.
