'Maleficent' vs. 'A Million Ways to Die in the West'
Release date: May 30, 2014
Longview Winner: "Maleficient"
Longview Loser: "A Million Ways to Die in The West" (sort of)
Should either film move off the date: Eh, probably not.
Lowdown: Disney's marketing might -- from parks to the Disney Channel to Disney Radio -- will push "Maleficient" to at least a $60 million opening. Seth MacFarlane's "Ted" opened to $54 million in 2012, but there's no wisecracking cute talking teddy bear this time around. Instead, the R-rated "West" will likely appeal more to adults than the family oriented "Maleficient," and could easily find a still stellar $40-50 million debut. At this point, however, it's hard to see it beating out Disney's major summer tentpole.
