Is 2015 the year of a major Madonna comeback?
Madonna spontaneously and smartly released six tracks from her upcoming album "Rebel Heart" as an unofficial EP. The songs range from the reggae-tinged "Unapologetic Bitch" to the anthemic "Living for Love," and together they're some of her most hook-based, danceable tracks of the past decade. While it's hard to say Madonna ever really goes away, it seems like she's poised to make a critical comeback in the vein of her Grammy-winning albums "Ray of Light" and "Confessions of a Dance Floor."
Likely outcome: Though Madonna's last two albums have not been critically hailed, it's fair to say both albums contained songs that should've been hits. "Give It 2 Me" off "Hard Candy," "Girl Gone Wild" off "MDNA," and even "Celebration" off her same-named greatest hits album were ambient dancefloor jams with major hooks, but none of them stuck as radio earworms. My guess is that "Rebel Heart" will earn good reviews and a couple of Grammy nominations, but I think its clubby vibe is more suited to album sales than individual radio smashes. It's going to be a good year for Madonna, but it will be less a sales coup like "Ray of Light" and more of a cool affirmation of her talents like "Confessions on a Dancefloor."
