"The Final Girls"
There have been plenty of post-modern horror films, and in the wake of "Scream," there were plenty of movies that tried to deconstruct the slasher genre. By mixing high-concept surrealism and big-hearted emotion, "The Final Girls" manages to succeed where so many other attempts have failed. One of the best ensemble casts of the festival is given plenty to do by screenwriters M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller, who deserve credit for digging deeper with their script. There are a hundred terrible versions of this film that I could imagine, and I've seen plenty of movies that made the easy mistakes. One of the best feelings of the entire fest was the dawning realization that these guys found the right way to do this. Also… Angela Trimbur dances, and if you understand why that's worth noting, you are in for a treat. - Drew McWeeny
