"A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velazquez Story"
One of the few standing ovations I saw at the festival was for this documentary about a brave young woman who took her own online bullying and turned it into fuel for an ongoing effort to bring light to just how real a problem that can be. There are times where you see a documentary and the subject is so profound that the filmmaking is almost beside the point. That's not the case here, and the film works because it never leans into the maudlin. Lizzie Velazquez, as a person, manages to maintain a strength and a sense of humor that is mind-boggling, and the film takes its cues from her. This is one of those films that only the hardest of hearts will resist, and I'm not sure why you'd even try. - Drew McWeeny
