Plus: Panettiere raps and swears, the Ledger diss and 'Twilight' overload
Worst: "Twilight" overload
The "Twilight" franchise is a true phenomenon. No one is disputing that. And on this night it was recognized for seven MTV Movie Award nominations (although you could easily have knocked that down to five). The problem was, unfortunately, that MTV's constant hype of the film's stars and the "sneak preview" during the show bordered on the comical. Even host Andy Samberg started mocking it and if you had a chance to watch the show again it seems he's actually pretty annoyed by it. Anybody remember "The Dark Knight," "Slumdog Millionaire" or "Iron Man"? Not at this show, that's for sure.
Summit Entertainment has got to be careful. They want to expand the audience for "New Moon" beyond the massive fanbase, but for every well crafted new trailer, this sort of exposure puts them dangerously closer to backlash mode. Last year, the studio went very quiet after a big burst of publicity at Comic-Con. They might be smart to follow that path again.
