Best: Katie Holmes' constant scowling
Jury's still out on whether or not any director is going to get a great performance about of Holmes; she's shown a few signs of life over the years, but left to her own devices, she can be dreadful, even hilarious, and she's really swinging for the fences in 'The Giver.' She's the overly stern and hyper-devout mother of Jonas, emphasizing the rules through clenched teeth, and if that was part of some larger character arc, fine. For a while, I thought she was going to turn out to be the old pupil of the Giver's, the one who cracked, and that would explain her rabid dedication to the rules. Nope. She's just playing that one note, that's all.
'Wait, that's all negative,' I can hear you say. 'How is this a Best of anything?' True... but I did also mention hilarious, didn't I?
