Worst: Meryl has the least interesting role in the movie
Meryl Streep's performance in "The Giver" strikes me as a last-minute favor. As the Chief Elder who believes in erasing memories and propelling this black-and-white world further into catatonia, Streep amounts to a humorless high school principal in an aged Anjelica Huston wig. She's unsmiling and transparently evil the minute she steps foot onscreen. Couldn't we have given her a song or something? This performance culminates in one tolerable "1984"-esque one-liner ("When people have the freedom to choose, they choose wrong") and a whole lot of grimacing. It's not exactly the new "Silkwood."
