Best: Laura Dern and Sam Trammel for trying
Playing parents in a teen drama usually means you're second fiddle to the main stars struggling with youthful angst. That's not entirely the case here. While Gus's parents are given one token introductory scene, Hazel's mom and dad are presented as well rounded as you could hope for. Dern, in particular, gives more depth to Frannie than is on the written page. Trammel is even more surprising as he displays more genuine range in one particularly moving scene with Woodley than in six seasons (so far) of "True Blood" combined.
