Best and Worst of the 2011 Billboard Music Awards: Britney Spears, Rihanna, Nicki
Who needs to retire from the music awards show circuit?
2011 Billboard Music Awards
Las Vegas is known for its string of entertainers -- both good and bad -- and the Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand on Sunday night (May 22) was no exception.
ABC Viewers and a few thousand fans in the giant theater were seeing stars at the show and ceremony, the first one held in five years. Rihanna, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Neil Diamond, Justin Bieber, Black Eyed Peas and other chart-toppers made the trek to Sin City, and it was performances more than the awards themselves that made for decent viewing.
And that's for the best. The honors themselves are tabulated by a "measure of all key fan interactions with music," from data partnerships that indicate album and single sales, radio data, social networking, the ilk... but from March 2010 to March 2011? And how are fan awards weighed? What's the new Millennium Award anyway? What distinguishes it from the AMAs? Were any prizes catered to artists who could confirm attendance at the show?
This brand identity and crossover opportunity may not need to answer those questions, when we're busy watching The Bieb and Selena Gomez smooch, or as Britney Spears tries again to dominate the stage, or when Rihanna's crawling on a stack of men. Check out our thoughts on this fast-paced, high energy music workout.

May 24, 2011 at 12:06PM EST Reply to CommentThe show was a total mess. Beyonce wins a Millenium Award? She...can...not...sing. Screech, yes, but sing? I'd love to hear her "sing" something by, say, Anita Baker, Natalie Cole or Chaka Khan. Don't even get me started about Britney Spears...she is a 'product' of a record company and certainly not a singer.
