Best: "Life Itself"
Professionally, Roger Ebert was a good friend to Steve James, writing one of his most enthusiastic reviews ever for "Hoop Dreams," boosting the visibility for one of the greatest documentaries ever made. "Life Itself," James' respectful-but-candid tribute to Ebert, is no "Hoop Dreams," but it's a funny and emotional movie about a talented writer, an often misunderstood profession and the importance of living every moment to its fullest no matter how gloomy your diagnosis may be. Martin Scorsese offering analysis of "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" is just one of the many treasures in this doc, which will surely play well with those admired Ebert.
