Worst: The awards themselves grow more irrelevant every year
We can debate the artistic merit of "Wrecking Ball" winning Video of the Year over Beyonce -- Art or Terry Richardson being Pervy... You make the call! --but the reality is that we've already nearly forgotten who won that award as well as nearly every other Moonman given out in the telecast. Seriously. Who won VMAs during the VMA telecast? Ariana Grande won something. I don't remember what. Drake won something, but he wasn't there. Meatball from "Hart of Dixie" -- Ed Sheeran, if you prefer -- won something, but again I couldn't tell you what. Fifth Harmony won a Taco Bell quesarito. And the award for Best Rock Video went to Lorde for "Royals" and I'll just let you ponder the categorization system that calls "Royals" a "rock" song. Granted that it's hard to care about a Video Music Awards telecast on a channel that doesn't show music videos, but maybe it's time to give out the awards during the pre-show and just do the VMAs as a straight-up concert uninterrupted by awards nobody cares about? Yeah. That's probably not gonna happen.
