Best and Worst of the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards
Best - Ryan Coogler's acceptance speech
"Fruitvale Station's" win for best first feature was one of the biggest locks of the afternoon and Ryan Coogler took advantage to craft the most moving speech of the day. After remarking on why the real family of Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan) couldn't attend (there was an anniversary memorial service today), he openly asked why a young black man in North Carolina, Jonathan Ferrell, was gunned down by police last year just like Grant was a few years ago. He noted, "There are thousands of Oscar Grants every year, people losing their lives to gun violence. I can't help thinking that if Jonathan Ferrell looked like Matthew McConaughey he'd still be alive today. I keep wondering why the people who get shot look like me and look like Michael B. Jordan. I'm so thankful to work in a medium that can allow me to ask those questions."
