It was a good slate of films north of the border this year
Best: 12 Years A Slave
Steve McQueen's exemplary drama tells the horrific true story of Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in mid 19th Century America. Northrup's journey is brutal and McQueen smartly insists on not taking the viewer off the hook. The director refuses to turn away from the painful whippings and beatings Northrup and his fellow slaves endured. It's a true cinematic experience only amplified by the outstanding performances by Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o. And, it's hands down already one of the best films of the year.
