One of the biggest bummers about awards shows is that the winners are rarely surprising, so when a so-called underdog manages to score a victory over the expected champion it's always a welcome relief. This year's biggest upsets fell in the categories of Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz winning over Tommy Lee Jones and Robert De Niro), Best Animated Feature ("Brave" beating out predicted winner "Wreck-It Ralph"), Best Director (Steven Spielberg was favored by many to win for "Lincoln," but Ang Lee instead took home the prize for "Life of Pi") and Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence's victory over Emmanuelle Riva came as a surprise to many after a late-in-the-game groundswell of support in the elder thesp's favor). In an awards show perennially dominated by sure things, the 2013 Oscars will surely go down in history as one of the least-predictable.
