Best: Andy Samberg
When Andy Samberg hosted the 2009 MTV Movie Awards it wasn't the slam dunk many hoped for. That was partially because "Twilight" dominated the proceedings (which was hard to knock with an audience full of teenage girls in the house), but also because Samberg didn't seem to know exactly what he wanted to do. For the Spirits, Samberg provided a proper dose of contemporary jokes (Oscar Pistorious before Seth McFarlane goes there tomorrow), insider humor for the room ("I hope everyone's enjoying their gallon of Jameson at every table, as well as their individual Jameson minis, which I guess are there in case you've gotta leave the table for any reason") and on the edge humor ("There is no horsemeat in this room. Michael Fassbender could not attend today. Look, I know that's a joke from last year, but his dick is so long it flopped into 2013"). Samberg also created three very funny pre-taped bits. The first was his dead on spoof of indie films titled "Bottlecap" (she just wanted to wave her arm in the wind), the current trend of skyping your auditions and "Beast It!" with Jack Black which was as close to an "SNL Digital Short" as you'll get tonight. Of course, it would have been great if the producers had Samberg introduce more presenters so he had a chance to ad lib on the night's proceedings, but overall a great afternoon for the lone "Lonely Island" member in the tent.
