Worst: David O. Russell's acceptance speech
Sometimes the audience at the Spirits doesn't remember most of them are either not voting members of Film Independent or that a majority of those members are everyday moviegoers across the nation. Therefore, when categories such as best director come up, they assume, for better or worse, that Benh Zeitlin would win for his modern classic "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (or there were just a helluva lot of Sundance Lab alumni in the audience). So, when David O. Russell won for "Silver Linings Playbook" (as anyone who knows the voting membership would have predicted), the filmmaker must have gotten some ribbing as he walked to the stage because he said - verbatim - "Benh Zeitlin is a young man. He'll be back." Excuse us? What a condescending way to go Mr. Russell. Some things are better left unsaid.
